1/Amah:Identity
Artist Statement
Amah is a color-focused synesthetic artist who utilizes geometric shapes to create a dialogue on how we perceive and see what is around us. The core tenet of her practice is in the paradoxical act of concealing as an act in which the subject is revealing. By playing with size, space, and color, she explores humanity’s duality and the fragmented self, using metaphor to understand our sensory and psychological experience of the world. Her shapes serve as a language, connecting her tribal ancestry; but also bridges an allegorical lineage of communication, symbol, myths, and powerful narration.
The influence of her African heritage and focus on identity is depicted often in the abstract representation of a mask or face where the geometric representational forms operate with tension, structure, and exploration. With opposing expressions and yet balanced intentions, weaving intricate lines of a labyrinth identity in which she connects to a universal truth.
Amah explores the depth of identity as something that has been lost, marginalized, and rejected. In a counter push, she addresses the universal identity as an associative psyche of oneself. These blending layers of identity fade, creating a tension and inner pull of societal norms of how one must define themselves through the face they wear rather than what they think they are.
